Aracavia on Canal Sur: every exotic animal needs its own care

A parrot on a shoulder, two guinea pigs in someone’s arms and a ferret that has been part of the family for years. This is how Canal Sur’s Andalucía Mediodía, explores everyday life with exotic animals in a report filmed at Aracavia, our veterinary clinic in Málaga.

The visit brings together animals, carers and professionals to discuss something we see in consultations every day: the bond with these companions comes with a responsibility to understand their needs. The central message of the report is clear: each species needs specific care.

Animals that are part of the family

The report captures warm moments, including the parrot beside the interviewee, the introduction of two guinea pigs and the account of someone who has shared their life with a ferret for years.

These scenes show the place these animals hold in their homes. Living with them means learning about their habits, respecting how they interact and giving them time. That bond also encourages us to ask what they need to thrive.

Every species has its own needs

The interview highlights the enormous diversity among the animals we describe as ‘exotic’. Birds, guinea pigs and ferrets have different needs, and their care must reflect those differences.

It also addresses the importance of detecting health problems early, as some changes can be difficult to spot. Knowing your animal’s normal behaviour and arranging veterinary follow-up helps you notice these changes.

At Aracavia, supporting families includes answering questions about each patient’s environment, handling and care. You can find more information in our species care guides.

Diet must be tailored too

Food is another topic covered in the report. Choosing an appropriate diet means considering the animal’s species and its needs. The same approach does not suit every patient.

That is why questions about diet deserve time during consultations. Knowing what your animal eats and their daily routine helps us guide the discussion and review suitable options with you.
